Step
Up Initiative
Step Up was designed to connect Minneapolis youth to opportunities
in employment, education, and recreation--opportunities they
need to step up to their potential today---and become our high-performing
workforce of tomorrow. Step Up worked to connect youth to positive
activities such as jobs, internships, volunteer opportunities,
recreational opportunities and sports.
With the Step Up initiative 2003, employers assisted young
people ages 14 to 21 by giving them the chance to explore
career options and on-site workplace training through employment
and internships while earning money. By having the opportunity
to experience a positive first job, students gained skills
and knowledge that they can carry into their future careers.
In addition, the Step Up initiative offered youth several
outlets in which to engage in positive activities. By providing
students with information through the What’s Up? Youth
Info Line (612-399-9999) www.whatsup.org
and an informational resource directory, youth had complete
access to an array of volunteer opportunities and safe recreational
activities in their local neighborhood and communities.
In 2004, Step Up became part of CPED’s “Close
the Gap” Initiative and has received funding to continue
in Summer 2004 through Close the Gap funding. METP has contracted
with Achieve! Minneapolis www.achieveminneapolis.org
to run Step Up through Summer 2004. The focus of the Initiative
has been narrowed since 2003. Step Up will focus on securing
private sector jobs for 16-21 year old Minneapolis youth and
on making sure the young people are “work ready”,
to meet employer needs. The goal is 200 new private sector
jobs and 200 young people certified as “work ready”.
