Chris Garner is a graduate of Northwestern University, where she received her Master of Science (M.S. 2013) in Journalism and Alabama State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications (B.A. 2009).
Garner has a true passion for media relations and youth outreach. As a teenager, she served as youth council president for Camphor Church in St. Paul and as a youth representative for the United Methodist Church. While at Alabama State University she covered campus issues and events for the Hornet Tribune and participated in student groups and organizations such as the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), College Democrats of America and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA). In addition Garner also served a troop leader for Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama.
Before joining the YCB in May of 2015, Garner worked as a freelance writer in New York writing for various online publications including XXL Magazine, The Source and Complex Media’s Green Label. In addition she did work in public relations for athletes such as Nick Young of the Golden State Warriors, Serge Ibaka of the Toronto Raptors and for former Miami Heat player Michael Beasley.
Garner has also written for local publications such as Insight News and the Minnesota Annual Conference of the UMC (MN Connect).
